Rugged Individualist

I have to leave you, Indiana, because
everyone else stays
I will go to where the sun shines every day

Being landlocked in a gray state holds the same
weight as being claustrophobic in a padded room

you cannot contain me, you will not keep me

It’s just because I’m Mexican—

I thought my skin soaking
the sun so peacefully meant

I was made to photosynthesize
under Floridian rays

It’s just because I’m free-spirited—

I want no agenda, maintain the feeling one
gets from vacationing somewhere near
the equator.

Florida can give a girl distance from her
hometown, from the Hoosiers who
drive her psychotic.

But they’re all forgotten now, too,

Everything must belong somewhere

only vacationers belong here.
