St. Joseph. Michigan

Brick buildings in this little town trap my happiness
inside them. The pastel-colored lake houses stand like lovely
boxy doll houses with cobblestone roads, they trim the town into perfect squares.
The neon Jimmy Johns sign flares a warm red hue across the lake.
The waters of the Great Lake Michigan
Stand like a glass bowl filled with fresh water,
the only thing creating ripples are fish and celestial forces.
This is what I’ve always loved, where I’d take anyone willing to go
for picnics during Fourth of July fireworks,
the popping and sparks of fireworks spiral
down toward themselves in the reflection of the lake
like flowers blooming in hyper-speed plant themselves in my veins
asI watch the watery reflection, the colors fading
into separate shooting stars, collide into each other:
sky meeting water
year after year.
