Palm Reader

Words are just so hard,
get rid of all the syllables
and use a single gesture

instead–half-hearted-wave
in ashes, or winks: remove
weight keeping trees away

from you. I wish you could
read the palms of leaves,
all those crinkled lines, fortune

to know the fate of the loam.
I wish I could read the life-line
in your broken brown dawns.

No, you didn’t take the bird’s tail,
but I’m always in the right sphere
at the wrong time, anyway…
