Catch & Release Regulations

Save us trouble of separation, side-effects…
Is there a silent way to release?

Root of all longing: his fading words,
dust shrouding every action

muted by wrecked opportunities
to run together–Willing to give both

my small hands, leap into lake’s cold
cradle tilling my veins open:

apology for planting the seed that took
you from far shore. Now clouds

disarray, skew what interpretation
thinks of as shapes, or omens, show ways

to dissipate slow as dripping molasses—
Any reassurance the waves don’t reflect

blue mutability, won’t hold our bones
for too long. Constant grinding away,

against each other, then apart, wave
after lulling salted wave, too buoyant

with longing to sink, O, how we wish
lucidity and ghosts would drown…
